The timing gear housing is a cast iron cover bolted to the front of the engine block. It encloses the timing gear train — crankshaft gear, camshaft gear, injection pump drive gear, and air compressor drive gear. Three jobs it has to do well:
When it fails, you usually see one of three symptoms: oil leaking from the front cover, gear whine, or engine vibration at idle. A warped housing throws timing off. On a 4-valve head, that means pistons kissing valves. So this is a small part that ends a big engine if it's wrong.
